The story

Porsche is a German automobile manufacturer specialising in high-performance sports cars, SUVs, and sedans. Founded by Ferdinand Porsche in 1931, the company began as an engineering consultancy before producing its own vehicles, starting with the iconic 356 in 1948. Today Porsche is part of Volkswagen Group and sells over 300,000 vehicles a year while maintaining its engineering-first culture.

History

Ferdinand Porsche established his design office in Stuttgart in 1931. Early work included consulting on the Volkswagen Beetle. The first vehicle to carry the Porsche name, the 356, debuted in 1948, a lightweight, rear-engined sports car built from VW components. The 911 arrived in 1964 and became the backbone of the brand. Through the 1970s and into the 1990s Porsche expanded with the 914, 924, 928, and 944. Near-bankruptcy in the early 1990s led to a dramatic turnaround under chairman Wendelin Wiedeking. The Boxster in 1996 and Cayenne SUV in 2002 stabilised finances. Porsche attempted a hostile takeover of Volkswagen in 2008-09 before the tables turned and VW absorbed Porsche into its group. The 918 Spyder (2013) and Taycan (2019) showcased next-generation performance engineering.

On track

Porsche is the most successful manufacturer at Le Mans with 19 overall victories. The 917 dominated at the end of the 1960s and early 1970s, immortalised by the 1971 winning car that still holds the race distance record. The 956 and 962 won six consecutive Le Mans victories (1982-1987). The 911 RSR and GT cars have kept Porsche at the front of GT-class racing for decades. In Formula 1 Porsche won two Constructors' Championships as an engine supplier (1983-84). The 919 Hybrid LMP1 car swept all major endurance races in 2015-2016 before Porsche returned to the top class with the 963 LMDh in 2023.
