Porsche

904 Carrera GTS

It is a factory mid-engine Porsche from the 1960s that a privateer could buy, race, and still drive on the road, with production low enough that every surviving car is a collection centerpiece.

The story

The Porsche 904 Carrera GTS was a fiberglass mid-engine homologation coupe built so Porsche could race in GT. About 120 cars were made, most with a 2.0-liter four-cam flat-four and a few with the new six. It is one of the most beautiful and usable 1960s Porsche race cars that still appears in historic events.

History

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche styled the 904 and Porsche built the first cars in 1963 for the 1964 season. The fiberglass body was bonded to a steel chassis, a new approach for the company. After the 904, Porsche moved to the 906 and later prototypes, so the 904 is the last of the customer GT cars from that era that still looks like a road coupe.

On track

The 904 won the 1964 Targa Florio and took class wins at Sebring, the Nürburgring, and Le Mans. It was competitive in both GT and prototype form depending on the engine fitted.
