The story

The Porsche Carrera GT is a naturally aspirated supercar centered on a 5.7-liter V10 engine originally developed for Le Mans racing, delivering 612 hp through a 6-speed manual gearbox to the rear wheels with no electronic driver aids. Its carbon fiber monocoque, ceramic composite clutch, and wooden gearshift knob, a Porsche tradition honoring balsa wood used in origin racing, made it one of the most technically sophisticated and demanding road cars ever produced. Only 1,270 were built.

It is considered by many as the greatest driving machine Porsche has ever produced.

History

The Carrera GT originated from a cancelled Le Mans prototype project; when Porsche withdrew from LMP1, the V10 engine found its way into a road car programme that debuted at Geneva 2000 as a concept. The production version arrived at the 2003 Paris Motor Show with its full specification. Its lack of stability control and hair-trigger handling made it notorious for catching out experienced drivers; it was simultaneously praised as the most emotionally pure Porsche ever built and cautioned against as demanding extreme respect.

On track

The Carrera GT's V10 engine was developed directly for Porsche's LMP1 Le Mans programme before budget cuts ended that programme. The technology demonstrably showed that Le Mans prototype engines could be civilized into extraordinary road use, influencing Porsche's approach to the 918 Spyder.
