The story

The Porsche Boxster revived Porsche from near-bankruptcy in the mid-1990s, providing a more accessible entry point to the brand with a mid-engine roadster layout and flat-six engine. Over successive generations it evolved from a 201 hp 2.5-liter to a 4.0-liter 420 hp naturally aspirated unit in Spyder form, consistently offering a mid-engine driving experience that rivaled cars costing twice as much. The Boxster became the backbone of Porsche's commercial recovery.

The Boxster saved Porsche as a company and introduced a generation of drivers to mid-engine handling purity at an accessible price point.

History

The production Boxster debuted in 1996 after the concept shown at Detroit 1993 generated immense enthusiasm. It shared components with the 996-generation 911 to reduce development costs. The 986-generation gave way to the 987 in 2004 with significantly improved engines and dynamics. The 981 of 2012 is considered the finest of the traditional naturally aspirated era. The 718 Boxster of 2016 moved to a turbocharged four-cylinder while the GTS 4.0 and Spyder retained six-cylinder power.

On track

While the Boxster itself is not a primary model for factory racing, its mid-engine platform has influenced Porsche's motorsport engineering. The Boxster's design principles are reflected in Porsche's racing cars, contributing to the brand's success on the track.
