The story

The Porsche 917 is the car that won Le Mans in 1970 and 1971 and then dominated Can-Am as the 917/10 and 917/30. Collectors treat the 917K, long-tail LH, and turbo Can-Am cars as separate objects, all of them among the most valuable racing Porsches in private hands.

History

Ferdinand Piëch built 25 cars to homologate the 917 for 1969. Early long-tails were unstable. The short-tail 917K of 1970, developed with John Wyer, won Le Mans with Herrmann and Attwood. The 917/30 of 1973 made over 1,100 horsepower in qualifying trim and ended the Can-Am formula.

On track

Le Mans wins in 1970 and 1971. Can-Am titles with Mark Donohue. The 917 is the reason Porsche is taken seriously as an endurance constructor, and original chassis still race in historic events.
