The story
The Porsche 918 Spyder is a plug-in hybrid hypercar that used racing technology from Porsche's Le Mans programme to combine a naturally aspirated 4.6-liter V8 with two electric motors for 887 combined horsepower. It was one third of the "Holy Trinity" of hypercars alongside the McLaren P1 and LaFerrari. Only 918 examples were built, selling out before the car was officially launched.
History
Development of the 918 Spyder began after the concept car's enthusiastic reception at Geneva 2010. Porsche drew directly on its RS Spyder Le Mans Prototype experience for the V8 engine and hybrid architecture. The 918 set a production car Nürburgring record of 6:57 in 2013, then shattered its own mark with a 6:57 on Michelin Cup 2 tyres. The "Weissach Package" deleted 35 kg via magnesium wheels, carbon roof panel, and titanium components.

The 918 Spyder's V8 engine architecture was directly derived from Porsche's RS Spyder LMP2 racing car, and the hybrid deployment strategy was developed alongside Porsche's Le Mans programme. The 918 demonstrated that hybrid technology could produce faster lap times than any pure-combustion rival of its era.
