The story
The Porsche Cayman is a mid-engine coupe that is widely regarded as the purest handling Porsche in the lineup, offering a chassis balance that many enthusiasts consider superior even to the 911. Starting with a 2.7-liter flat-six and growing through generations into a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated or turbocharged flat-six, the Cayman has consistently offered more steering feel, driver feedback, and on-road playfulness per dollar than virtually any mainstream competitor.
The GT4 RS with the 911 GT3 engine represents the Cayman finally unleashed to its full potential.
History
Derived from the Boxster roadster and launched in 2005, the Cayman added a fixed roof and hatchback body that transformed the car's structural rigidity and increased luggage capacity. The 981-generation of 2012 refined the chassis to near-perfection. The 718 Cayman of 2016 controversially moved to a turbocharged four-cylinder, though the GT4 variant retained a naturally aspirated six. The GT4 RS of 2021, using the 9000 rpm flat-six from the 911 GT3, is considered among the finest driver's cars ever produced.
