Taycan

The Taycan's 800-volt architecture means it can perform a maximum-speed run, charge for 20 minutes, and repeat at full performance indefinitely, making it the first EV that behaves on a track more like a racing car than...

The story

The Porsche Taycan is Porsche's first fully electric production car, built on a dedicated 800-volt architecture that allows ultra-fast charging and repeated high-performance runs without thermal throttling, a characteristic that exposed many rival EVs as capable of only a single fast lap. Its dual-motor setup produces up to 750 hp in Turbo S form with a claimed 0-60 time of 2.6 seconds. The Taycan reframed what a sports EV could feel like.

It established the benchmark for serious electric sports cars.

History

Debuting at simultaneous global events in September 2019, the Taycan was built in Zuffenhausen alongside the 911. An 800-volt system was chosen specifically to solve the repeated-performance degradation problem that plagued rival EVs. Sport Turismo estate and Cross Turismo variants expanded the lineup. The GTS and Turbo GT followed with increasingly focused driving dynamics. Porsche demonstrated the Taycan's endurance by completing a record 265-lap session at the Nürburgring.

On track

The Porsche Taycan established the production EV benchmark at the Nürburgring with a 7:33.35 lap in 2024 for the Turbo GT, breaking the previous production EV record. Porsche's Formula E programme ran in parallel with Taycan development, with shared learnings in motor efficiency and thermal management.
