Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW) is a German manufacturer of automobiles, motorcycles, and aircraft engines. Founded in 1916, BMW's reputation rests on rear-wheel-drive driver-focused sports sedans and coupes, particularly the 3 Series, which defined the "sport sedan" segment, alongside M-branded performance variants and a burgeoning luxury and electric vehicle lineup.
The ultimate driving machine.
BMW began as an aircraft engine manufacturer during WWI. Post-war treaty restrictions forced the company to pivot to motorcycles (the R32 in 1923) and then automobiles. The pre-war 328 roadster was the most advanced sports car of its era. After WWII BMW rebuilt slowly, the 507 roadster (1956) becoming a design icon. Sales of the Neue Klasse sedans in the early 1960s saved the company from collapse. The 1969 takeover bid by Mercedes-Benz was narrowly rebuffed by shareholders. The Motorsport division was established in 1972 and produced the M1, M3, and M5. Acquisition of Rover Group in 1994 was a costly mistake BMW divested by 2000, retaining only Mini and Rolls-Royce. The E46 M3 (2000) and E90 M3 (2007) are considered the finest drivers' cars of their generations. In 2013 BMW launched the i brand with the i3 and i8.
BMW M won the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1999 with the V12 LMR. The M1 Procar Series in 1979-1980 attracted Formula 1 drivers including Lauda, Prost, and Piquet to race identically prepped road-based M1s. BMW supplied turbocharged 4-cylinder engines to the Brabham F1 team, powering Nelson Piquet to the 1983 World Championship. The M3 E30 won 1,500 + races and multiple Touring Car championships. The M4 GT3 and LMDh programme has brought BMW back to the top of endurance racing.
