The story
The BMW M3 is the definitive sports sedan, a car that, since its debut in 1986, has consistently proven that a four-door family car can match or exceed dedicated sports cars on both road and track. Born from motorsport homologation requirements for the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM), it has evolved through six generations while always maintaining its core identity: the finest balance of performance, practicality, and driver involvement in its class.
It is the car that more driving enthusiasts cite as their ideal all-purpose machine than any other model in automotive history.
History
The E30 M3 of 1986 used a high-revving 2.3-liter four-cylinder to homologate the car for DTM and immediately became one of the most successful touring car racers ever built. The E36 and E46 generations maintained the formula while growing in sophistication; the E46 M3 is widely considered the finest of the traditionally simple era. The V8-powered E92 M3 added drama and power. The F80 generation introduced turbocharging, and the G80 added all-wheel-drive. Throughout its evolution, the M3 has remained the benchmark for driver-focused sports saloons.
On track
The E30 M3 dominated DTM and European Touring Car Championship racing in the late 1980s, winning hundreds of races across multiple championships. The E46 M3 GTR, powered by a naturally aspirated V8, won the American Le Mans Series GT class in 2001 before homologation rules forced its withdrawal.
