M5

The E39 M5 remains the definitive example of what a performance sedan should be, analog, perfectly balanced, with a naturally aspirated V8 and a manual gearbox in a body that looked barely different from a standard 5 Se...

The story

The BMW M5 invented the concept of the performance luxury sedan, taking the full-size 5 Series and creating, with BMW's M division, a machine capable of embarrassing dedicated sports cars while carrying four adults in comfort. The original E28 M5 of 1984 was, at launch, the fastest production sedan in the world. It has held that title multiple times across its subsequent generations.

It set the template that every performance sedan has aspired to since.

History

The E28 M5 debuted at Amsterdam 1984 with a hand-built 3.5-liter inline-six producing 286 hp in a deliberately understated body. The E34 M5 followed with a 3.8-liter six, and the legendary E39 M5 of 1998 introduced a 400 hp naturally aspirated V8 widely considered the finest M5 ever built. The V10-powered E60 M5 of 2005 brought 507 hp and controversy over its complex electronics. Recent generations with V8 turbo power in F10 and G30 form have exceeded 600 hp.

On track

While the M5 is primarily a road car, its engineering and performance capabilities have made it a popular choice for enthusiasts in various motorsport events, particularly in endurance racing and track days.
