The story

The BMW i8 was a plug-in hybrid sports car that combined a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine with a 131 hp electric motor for 362 combined horsepower, wrapped in a swooping carbon fiber body with distinctive dihedral doors. It was designed as a vision statement for future BMW performance and represented the most advanced production car the company had ever built at the time of its launch.

History

The i8 concept first appeared in 2009 as a Vision EfficientDynamics study before being confirmed for production. The production car debuted at Frankfurt 2013 and went on sale in 2014, achieving 0-62 mph in 4.4 seconds despite its modest combined output. A Roadster variant arrived in 2018. The i8's carbon fiber Life module cabin drove development of lightweight construction techniques that influenced subsequent BMW models. The car was discontinued in 2020 as standalone EVs became more practical than complex hybrids.
