Mercedes-Benz is a German global automobile marque and a division of Mercedes-Benz Group AG (formerly Daimler AG). Karl Benz patented the first true automobile in 1886; the Mercedes-Benz brand was established in 1926 after the merger of Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft and Benz & Cie. The three-pointed star signifies dominance of land, sea, and air transportation. Today Mercedes-Benz offers the S-Class flagship, AMG performance models, and the EQ electric sub-brand.
The best or nothing.
Karl Benz's Patent-Motorwagen of 1885 is universally recognised as the first automobile. Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach independently developed a high-speed petrol engine the same year. The two companies merged in 1926, combining the Benz name with the Mercedes model name (originally a name requested by race promoter Emil Jellinek for his daughter). Pre-war Silver Arrow racing cars (W25, W125, W154) were unbeatable in Grand Prix racing. Post-war rebuilding produced the legendary Gullwing 300 SL (1954). Fuel injected, it was the fastest production car of its era. The W222 S-Class epitomises modern luxury technology. AMG, a racing-oriented tuning company, was absorbed in 1999 and became the performance arm. EQ electric vehicles launched in 2019.
Mercedes-Benz competed in Grand Prix racing from the 1910s onward with extraordinary success. The Silver Arrows W25 and W125 dominated in the 1930s with drivers Caracciola and Fangio. Returning to F1 in 1954 Mercedes won both the Drivers' and Constructors' titles before withdrawing after Le Mans 1955 disaster. Mercedes returned as engine supplier in 1994 and, as a constructor from 2010, won eight consecutive Constructors' Championships (2014-2021). Lewis Hamilton's six World Championship titles with Mercedes (2014-2020) are the most for any driver-manufacturer combination. The SLR McLaren GT won Le Mans GT class; the SLS GT3 has won numerous national championships.
