The story
The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG was AMG's first entirely independent car development, not a modified Mercedes model but a clean-sheet design built from the ground up. It revived the 300 SL's gullwing door layout in a contemporary GT car powered by a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 producing 563 hp, with the engine mounted entirely behind the front axle for near-perfect weight distribution. It marked AMG's transition from tuner to proper automaker.
History
Developed entirely in-house by AMG, the SLS debuted at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show and entered production in 2010. A Roadster version with conventional doors followed in 2011. The SLS AMG GT of 2012 added 20 hp and revised aerodynamics. The Electric Drive of 2013, four electric motors, 740 hp, was the most powerful electric production car in the world at its launch and hinted at AMG's future direction. The final Black Series of 2013 produced 622 hp from an evolved naturally aspirated V8.
