The story

Jaguar is a British manufacturer of luxury cars and SUVs with a heritage spanning over a century, originating as the Swallow Sidecar Company founded in Blackpool in 1922 by William Lyons and William Walmsley. Renowned for its classic blend of performance, elegance, and British craftsmanship, Jaguar has produced some of the most beautiful and iconic cars in history, from the triple Le Mans-winning D-Type and the sublime E-Type to the XJ220 supercar and the modern F-Type sports car. The company operates today as part of JLR (Jaguar Land Rover), owned by India's Tata Motors since 2008.

History

William Lyons co-founded the Swallow Sidecar Company in Blackpool in 1922, producing motorcycle sidecars before creating stylish coachbuilt body shells on Austin Sevens. The company moved to Coventry, became S.S. Cars Ltd, then adopted the Jaguar name in 1945 to shed wartime associations. The XK120 of 1948 staggered the world as the fastest production car at 120 mph with a stunning open body. The C-Type and D-Type racing cars won five consecutive Le Mans from 1951 to 1957 (excluding 1952). The E-Type of 1961, designed by Malcolm Sayer, was called "the most beautiful car ever made" by Enzo Ferrari. The XJ saloon revolutionised luxury motoring in 1968 and held the role of Britain's definitive luxury car for decades. British Leyland ownership brought years of financial hardship; Ford acquired Jaguar in 1989 and invested in quality and engineering. Tata Motors purchased Jaguar Land Rover in 2008. Under Tata, the F-Type returned Jaguar to pure sports car relevance, while the I-PACE electric SUV won the European, World, and German Car of the Year awards in 2019.

On track

Jaguar's Le Mans record is remarkable. The C-Type won the 24 Hours in 1951 and 1953; the D-Type won consecutively in 1955, 1956, and 1957, giving Jaguar five Le Mans victories, a record matched in Britain only by Bentley. The XJR-9LM won Le Mans in 1988 during a late-era Group C sports car programme. In Formula 1, a factory Jaguar team competed from 2000 to 2004 with limited success. Today, Jaguar Racing competes in Formula E, winning the Teams' Championship in Season 8 and becoming one of the series' most successful manufacturers.
