The story

The Jaguar E-Type is, by widespread consensus, the most beautiful production car ever designed. Revealed at Geneva 1961, Enzo Ferrari, not a man given to complimenting rivals, called it "the most beautiful car ever made." Its 3.8-liter straight-six could achieve 150 mph at a time when that was a remarkable figure, and it sold for approximately one third the price of the Ferrari 250 GT it outperformed.

It remains the high water mark of British automotive design.

History

The E-Type's Malcolm Sayer-penned monocoque body was derived directly from the D-Type Le Mans racer and used an independent rear suspension designed by William Heynes that was revolutionary for its price class. The series 1 of 1961-1968 is the most celebrated, with the cleanest styling; the series 2 made concessions to US safety and emissions regulations, and the series 3 of 1971-1975 introduced a 5.3-liter V12. Over 72,500 E-Types were produced across all variants during its 14-year production run.

On track

The E-Type competed successfully in production sports car racing through the early 1960s, with privateers achieving podiums at Goodwood, Silverstone, and in American SCCA racing. The factory-prepared lightweight E-Types of 1963, 12 examples, were built specifically for competition and remain among the most valuable Jaguars ever made.
