The story

Bugatti Automobiles is a French manufacturer of ultra-luxury hypercars. Founded in Alsace by Italian artist-engineer Ettore Bugatti in 1909, the marque built some of the finest racing and road cars of the pre-war era. Revived under Volkswagen Group ownership in 1998, modern Bugattis, the Veyron and Chiron, are defined by extraordinary power, bespoke craftsmanship, and quadruple-digit horsepower figures.

History

Ettore Bugatti combined an artist's eye with an engineer's precision, producing racing cars of exceptional delicacy and beauty from his factory in Molsheim. The Type 35 (1924) won more than 1,000 races over its production life. The Type 41 Royale (1927-1933) was among the largest and most expensive cars ever built. Bugatti died in 1947; the company staggered through several revivals before Romano Artioli produced the EB110 in 1991-1995. Volkswagen Group acquired the brand in 1998 and unveiled the Veyron concept. The production Veyron 16.4 debuted in 2005 with 1,001 hp, the first road car to exceed 1,000 hp. The Chiron (2016) raised this to 1,479 hp; the Chiron Super Sport 300+ broke the 300 mph barrier in 2019. In 2021 VW sold Bugatti to Rimac, forming Bugatti Rimac.

On track

The pre-war Bugatti Type 35 is arguably the most successful racing car ever built by total victories. It won the Targa Florio five consecutive times and dominated Grand Prix racing in the mid-1920s. The Type 51 and Type 54 continued the racing legacy into the early 1930s. The post-war company made no significant factory racing programme. Modern Bugattis are not built for competition, though the Bolide track concept (2020) demonstrates performance with motorsport-derived aerodynamics.
