The story

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 was the most technically complex road car ever built, a quad-turbocharged W16 engine producing 1,001 horsepower in a car elegant enough to wear a suit. Decades in development under Volkswagen Group and a billion-euro project, the Veyron proved the impossible: 1,000 hp, 250 mph, and daily usability could coexist.

The Veyron is engineering as statement.

History

Ferdinand Piëch, VW Group chairman, demanded a car with over 1,000 hp during a board meeting in the late 1990s. Engineers declared it impossible and nearly quit. The Veyron prototype (EB16.4) was shown in 2001. The production version debuted in 2005 with 1,001 hp, the first production car to certifiably break the 1,000 hp barrier. The W16 engine is essentially two narrow-angle V8s joined at the crankshaft, paired with four turbochargers. Cooling required 10 radiators. Top speed was 253 mph (407 km/h). The Super Sport (2010) produced 1,200 hp and set a 267.8 mph record. The Grand Sport Vitesse convertible followed. The final Veyrons were limited editions with herringbone carbon and bespoke interior details.

On track

The Veyron was never intended as a racing car. Its purpose was to demonstrate VW Group's engineering supremacy. However, the Super Sport's 267.8 mph run was conducted under controlled conditions at the Ehra-Lessien oval, making it a verifiable performance record.
