The story
The Bugatti Chiron is the successor to the Veyron and the most powerful production car ever made in standard form. Producing 1,479 hp from a remapped and strengthened evolution of the Veyron's W16 quad-turbo engine, the Chiron's 261 mph (electronically limited) top speed was raised to 304.773 mph (490.484 km/h) in the Chiron Super Sport 300+, the first production car to break 300 mph.

History
Named after pre-war Bugatti driver Louis Chiron, the car was revealed at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. The engine was rebuilt on Veyron foundations with new valve timing, larger intercoolers, and exhaust routing to provide 1,479 hp and 1,600 Nm of torque. A new 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox replaced the DSG. Carbon fibre construction was advanced further. 500 Chirons were planned; the final car sold in 2021. Limited variants, the Chiron Sport, Pur Sport (more track-focused), Super Sport 300+, and Sky View, extended the line. Bugatti will transition to the Tourbillon as the Chiron's successor.

In September 2019 Andy Wallace drove the Chiron Super Sport 300+ prototype to 490.484 km/h (304.773 mph) on Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessien test track, the first time a production car-based machine exceeded 300 mph. This is the highest confirmed speed for any motor vehicle.
