Audi AG is a German automobile manufacturer that produces luxury vehicles. Member of the Volkswagen Group, Audi's name derives from a Latin translation of founder August Horch's surname. The four-ring logo represents the 1932 merger of four auto companies into Auto Union. Audi pioneered and commercialised permanent all-wheel drive in passenger cars with the Quattro system, transforming both road car capability and rally competition.

History
August Horch founded his second company (after leaving Horch) calling it "Audi", Latin for "horch" (listen). Auto Union formed in 1932 from Audi, Horch, DKW, and Wanderer. Post-war Auto Union was owned by Daimler-Benz then by Volkswagen from 1964, which rebuilt the Audi brand. The Audi 80 and 100 established credibility in the 1970s. The Ur-Quattro of 1980 brought permanent 4WD to production cars and dominated the World Rally Championship. The Audi TT (1998) was a critically acclaimed design achievement. Audi became the pinnacle luxury brand under VW Group, rivalling BMW and Mercedes. The e-tron electric SUV launched in 2018; the Q6 e-tron and A6 e-tron followed.

The Quattro dominated Group B rallying from 1981 to 1986, winning the World Rally Championship twice (1982-1983) and reshaping what a rally car could be. At Le Mans Audi won 13 times, a record for any single model/programme, with the R8, R10, R15, R18, and R18 e-tron Quattro hybrid LMP1 cars from 2000 to 2014. Tom Kristensen won nine times at Le Mans, the most by any driver, mostly in Audis. Audi dominated the American Le Mans Series and has won Daytona. In DTM Audi won multiple manufacturers' championships. The RS e-tron GT contested the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb.
