The story

The Audi Quattro introduced permanent four-wheel drive to production road cars and simultaneously transformed rally racing forever. Powered by a turbocharged five-cylinder engine producing an initially modest 200 hp (rising to 306 hp in later Sport Quattro short-wheelbase form), it combined AWD grip with turbocharged power in a way that had no contemporary equivalent. The Quattro is among the most consequential automobiles of the 20th century.

Every AWD performance car in existence owes a direct debt to this one machine.

History

Debuting at Geneva 1980, the Quattro entered rally racing the same year. Engineer Jörg Bensinger had championed the AWD system after experiencing the superior traction of a military vehicle in snowy conditions. The homologation Sport Quattro of 1984, 200 shortened units with a 306 hp engine, was built purely to qualify for Group B rally racing. Quattro won the World Rally Championship manufacturers title in 1982 and 1984, and drivers Hannu Mikkola and Stig Blomqvist won driver's titles in 1983 and 1984 in the car.

On track

The Quattro's rally career represented a seismic shift in the sport. No tarmac or gravel rally car could match its AWD traction advantage, and it dominated the WRC from 1982-1984. The shorter, more powerful Sport Quattro Evo 2 continued competing through 1986 when the Group B era ended following fatal accidents. It remains the single most influential rally car in WRC history.
