The story
The Audi R8 is Audi's mid-engine supercar, the production road car born directly from the Le Mans-winning R8 LMP prototype racing program. Powered initially by a naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8 and later by a 5.2-liter V10 producing 610 hp, it brought race-proven technology to the road while remaining genuinely usable as a daily driver. The R8's Audi DNA, quattro all-wheel drive, build quality, understated styling, sets it apart from Italian and German rivals.
History
Unveiled at Paris 2006 sharing a platform with the Lamborghini Gallardo (both under Volkswagen Group ownership), the R8 offered an approachable entry into mid-engine supercar ownership. The V10 arrived in 2008, immediately claiming best-in-class status. A second-generation R8 launched in 2015 with a higher-revving V10 Plus producing 610 hp and rear-wheel steering. The R8 LMS GT3 became one of the most widely raced customer GT cars in the world.

The Audi R8 LMP was one of the greatest Le Mans cars ever built, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans five consecutive times from 2000-2005. The road car derived its name and engineering DNA from this programme. The R8 LMS GT3 racing variant has won championships on every inhabited continent since 2009.
