Mazda Motor Corporation is a Japanese manufacturer known for producing some of the most driver-focused affordable cars in the world. Famous for the MX-5 Miata, the best-selling two-seat roadster ever, and for being the only manufacturer to perfect the rotary engine for commercial use, Mazda has carved a distinctive identity despite its modest size.

History
Mazda started as Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., making machine tools, then pivoting to three-wheel trucks. The R360 coupé (1960) was Mazda's first passenger car. Felix Wankel's rotary engine technology was licensed in 1961; the Mazda Cosmo Sport (1967) became the first production rotary car. The RX-7 (1978) and RX-8 (2003) continued the rotary tradition until emissions regulations became insurmountable. The MX-5 Miata (1989) reinvented the affordable sports car and has sold over 1.1 million units, the world's best-selling roadster. The Mazda3 and CX-5 anchor the mainstream range. Mazda rediscovered the rotary with the MX-30 R-EV (2023) as a range-extender generator.

Mazda is the only Japanese manufacturer, and the only manufacturer with a non-piston engine, to win Le Mans outright. The 787B rotary-powered car won the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans in a dramatic race. The rotary howl of the 787B is considered one of motorsport's most distinctive sounds. Mazda competed in Indy Car racing with the 12A turbocharged engine in 1991. The MX-5 Cup series is one of the most popular customer racing formulas in North America. Mazda dominated US-spec Club Racing with the MX-5 for decades.
