The story

The Mazda RX-7 is the only commercially successful rotary-engined sports car. Produced across three generations, the twin-rotor Wankel engine gave the RX-7 a uniquely smooth, high-revving power delivery and a low bonnet line impossible with a conventional piston engine. The FD3S third generation (1992–2002) is beloved for its perfectly balanced chassis, sequential twin-turbo system, and Sculpture-like beauty.

History

The SA22C first generation (1978) replaced the RX-3 and offered impressive performance at accessible prices. The FC3S second generation (1985) added turbocharging and refined the formula. The FD3S third generation (1992) was a complete redesign by chief engineer Takumi Yamazaki. The sequential twin-sequential turbos delivered progressive, linear power. Kerb weight was under 1,300 kg. The pop-up headlights, flared fenders, and smooth fastback body remain timeless. Production ended in 2002 when increasingly strict emissions regulations made the rotary's thirst unacceptable. Mazda re-introduced a rotary as a range-extender in the MX-30 R-EV (2023).

On track

The RX-7 won IMSA GTU, GTO, and GTS class championships multiple times across the 1980s and 1990s. Mazda's 787B rotary won Le Mans outright in 1991, while not an RX-7 it shares the rotary DNA. In Australian GT the RX-7 was a consistent podium contender. FD-spec Super GT cars raced into the 2000s.
