Volkswagen AG is a German automobile manufacturer and one of the world's largest automakers. Founded in 1937 to produce an affordable "people's car" (Volkswagen in German), the company's Beetle became one of the most produced and recognised vehicles in history. The VW Group today comprises twelve brands including Audi, Porsche, SEAT, Škoda, Bentley, Lamborghini, and Bugatti.

History
The Volkswagen project emerged from a Nazi-era initiative to produce an affordable vehicle for every German family, designed by Ferdinand Porsche. The Beetle production began after WWII under British occupation, and the company grew into a global powerhouse. The Golf (Rabbit in the US) replaced the Beetle in 1974 and became one of the most popular cars of all time. The Golf GTI (1976) invented the hot hatch segment. VW expanded aggressively through acquisitions of Audi, SEAT, Škoda, Bentley, Lamborghini, Bugatti, and Porsche from the 1960s through 2012. The 2015 Dieselgate emissions scandal, in which VW admitted fitting defeat device software to millions of diesel cars, was the largest scandal in automotive history and cost the company over $30 billion in fines and settlements. VW has since committed massively to electrification with the ID range.

VW has been a force in rallying through its Polo R WRC programme. The Polo R WRC won four consecutive World Rally Championships (2013-2016) with Sébastien Ogier and Jari-Matti Latvala, an unmatched modern run of dominance. The Beetle and Golf have been popular motorsport platforms for privateer racing worldwide. In the USA the SCCA H-Production Beetle became an motorsport institution. VW's ID.R prototype set the Pikes Peak record in 2018 and the Nürburgring electric lap record same year.
