The story
The Lexus LFA is the most expensive and technically ambitious car Toyota has ever produced, a ten-year development project that cost more to engineer than the entire LFA program generated in sales revenue. Its 4.8-liter naturally aspirated V10 engine, designed and manufactured entirely by Lexus, produces 553 hp at 8,700 rpm with an exhaust note so distinctive that a digital rev counter, analog gauges responded too slowly, was required. Only 500 examples were built at a price of $375,000.
History
LFA development began in 2000 under Chief Engineer Haruhiko Tanahashi with a brief to create a car worthy of beating the best from Porsche and Ferrari. The program pivoted mid-development to carbon fiber reinforced polymer construction, requiring Toyota to build its own CFRP manufacturing facility. The resulting car weighed just 1,480 kg. It debuted at Tokyo 2009 and was built at a rate of 20 cars per month at a dedicated facility in Toyota City.

Three LFAs competed at the 2012 Nürburgring 24 Hours under the Gazoo Racing banner, with one finishing 49th overall and winning the SP8 class, a remarkable result for a road car variant. The Nürburgring Package variant included revised suspension and aerodynamics for record lap time attempts.
