The story

Lexus is the luxury and performance vehicle division of Toyota Motor Corporation, launched in 1989 after a six-year secret programme codenamed F1 to build the finest luxury car in the world. Operating globally from Nagoya, Lexus combines Toyota's legendary build quality and reliability with premium design, advanced technology, and driver-focused engineering. The LFA supercar, a 4.8-litre V10 carbon fibre masterpiece, and the performance-oriented F and F Sport variants have established Lexus as a manufacturer capable of producing world-class driver's cars that rival the established European performance hierarchy.

History

Toyota launched Project F1 in 1983, a confidential programme employing 450 engineers with one objective: create a car superior to Rolls-Royce in refinement and Mercedes-Benz in reliability. Six years later the Lexus LS 400 was unveiled at the 1989 Detroit Auto Show. Its engineering precision, near-silent cruising, and reliability shocked European luxury marques and rapidly reordered the American luxury sedan market. The LS series became the backbone of the brand. In 1998 Lexus introduced the world's first luxury hybrid in the RX 300h, pioneering green premium motoring. After years of building a reputation for restrained competence, Lexus revealed its engineering ambition in the LFA supercar (2010–2012): a 552 bhp V10, an 8,700 rpm redline, and a Yamaha-designed soundtrack that owners describe as the finest engine note in a production car. The LC 500 of 2017 confirmed Lexus's ability to build visually stunning, driver-rewarding grand tourers. Lexus is now leading Toyota's BEV strategy in the premium segment.

On track

Lexus participates in motorsport through the Super GT championship in Japan, where the RC F GT500 won the title in 2016 and the LC500 and GR Supra have carried the torch since. The RC F GT3 was developed for international customer racing and has won at Spa and Bathurst in the Intercontinental GT Challenge. The LFA's competition version the LFA Code X competed at the Nürburgring 24 Hours. GS F and RC F variants have contested the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in North America.
