The story
The Lamborghini Diablo bridged the Countach era and modern Lamborghini, introducing fuel injection and a 5.7-liter V12 producing 492 hp, enough to make it the first production Lamborghini to exceed 200 mph. Named after the legendary fighting bull El Diablo, it remained in production for 11 years across rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive variants. Audi's 1998 acquisition brought the definitive Diablo VT 6.0 with proper build quality and a new 550 hp 6.0-liter V12.
History
Designed by Marcello Gandini with final styling revisions by Chrysler (which owned Lamborghini at launch), the Diablo entered production in 1990 as a rear-wheel-drive car. Four-wheel drive arrived with the VT in 1993, expanding the car's usability. A roadster version launched in 1996. Following Audi's acquisition, the revised Diablo VT 6.0 of 2000 addressed the car's long-standing quality and ergonomic shortcomings. The Diablo GT, 80 units, 575 hp, rear-wheel drive only, is considered the ultimate expression of the Gandini-era Lamborghini.
On track
The Diablo Supertrophy one-make series ran from 1996 to 1999, becoming a popular gateway GT racing championship. Factory-backed GT variants competed in the FIA GT Championship and BPR Global GT Series during the late 1990s with considerable podium finishes.
