The story

The Lamborghini Countach was Marcello Gandini's vision of an automotive future realized in steel and fiberglass, a wedge-shaped, scissor-doored statement of aggression that made every other car look conservative. Its name is Piedmontese dialect for an exclamation of astonished disbelief, which perfectly captures the reaction it generated from anyone seeing it for the first time. Powered by a 5.2-liter V12 in final form, it remained in production for 16 years.

It is the most poster-worthy car ever produced.

History

The Countach LP 500 concept debuted at Geneva 1971 and entered production as the LP 400 in 1974. The LP 400 S of 1978 introduced wide-body fender flares and an optional rear wing that became the car's signature look. The LP 500 S of 1982 enlarged the engine to 4.8 liters, and the LP 5000 QV added four valves per cylinder. The 25th Anniversary edition of 1988 featured aerodynamic bodywork redesigned by a young Horacio Pagani, before he founded his own company. The Countach established Lamborghini's language of dramatic angles and maximum theatrical presence for decades.
