The story
The Lamborghini Aventador replaced the aging Murciélago with a new carbon fiber monocoque, a naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 producing 700 hp, and a new ISR single-clutch automated gearbox. It was the last Lamborghini powered solely by a naturally aspirated V12 before the hybrid Revuelto succeeded it, representing the purest expression of the traditional Lamborghini formula. Over 11,000 Aventadors were sold across all variants.
It is the definitive last statement of the classical Lamborghini formula.
History
Unveiled at Geneva 2011 with theatrical ceremony, the Aventador set new production-car standards for carbon fiber construction. The Roadster followed in 2012. A series of ultra-limited special editions elevated the range: the Veneno (5 units), Centenario (40 units), and the SVJ which set a 6:44.97 production-car lap record at the Nürburgring in 2018. The final Aventador Ultimae of 2022 produced 780 hp, bridging to the hybrid Revuelto.
On track
The Aventador SVJ's ALA (Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva) active aerodynamic system was developed with wind tunnel work informed by Lamborghini's motorsport partnerships with MIT. The SVJ's 6:44.97 Nürburgring lap, achieved without hybrid assistance, remains one of the great milestones of naturally aspirated supercar engineering.
