The story

Koenigsegg Automotive AB is a Swedish manufacturer of extreme high-performance sports cars, founded by Christian von Koenigsegg at the age of 22. Operating from a former Swedish Air Force base in Ängelholm, Koenigsegg has repeatedly broken absolute production car speed records and introduced radical innovations including the Freevalve camless engine, the Tiny Friendly Giant electric motor, and bespoke paddle-shift transmissions. Every Koenigsegg is a rolling laboratory of forward-thinking engineering built in very small numbers and configured individually for each customer.

History

Christian von Koenigsegg founded the company in 1994 after being inspired as a child by a Norwegian stop-motion animated film about a bicycle repairman who builds his own racing car. Determined to create the perfect sports car, he spent years developing the CC prototype before the production CC8S debuted at the 2002 Paris Motor Show. The CCR broke the Guinness World Record for fastest production car in 2005 at 387.87 km/h. The Agera platform, launched in 2011, formed the basis for increasingly powerful variants culminating in the Agera RS, which set an absolute production car top speed record of 447.19 km/h in 2017 on a closed Nevada highway. The 2019 Jesko targets 300 mph and features Koenigsegg's in-house 9-speed Light Speed Transmission. The 2020 Gemera became the world's first four-seat hypercar, pairing a hybrid powertrain with practical touring capability. Koenigsegg consistently files more patents per vehicle than any other manufacturer in the world.

On track

Koenigsegg does not participate in formal circuit racing series; the brand's competitive arena is top-speed record setting. The CCR set a Guinness World Record in 2005; the Agera RS became the fastest production car in history in 2017, averaging 447.19 km/h over two bidirectional runs on a Nevada highway. These benchmark events represent Koenigsegg's version of motorsport, replacing lap times with absolute velocity milestones that redefine what road-legal machinery can achieve.
