Rs200

Exactly 200 street cars, a mid-engine Cosworth turbo, and the last Ford built to Group B rules. Collectors treat it as Ford's 911 GT1: a race car that had to be sold to the public.

The story

The Ford RS200 is a mid-engine, four-wheel-drive Group B homologation special. Ford built 200 street cars so it could rally the Evolution. The road car has 250 horsepower; the Evolution could exceed 450. It is the rarest modern Ford a serious collection usually wants.

History

Ford designed the RS200 from a clean sheet after the Escort RS 1700T was cancelled. Ghia styled the body and Reliant built the composite tub. Group B ended in 1986 after a series of fatal accidents, so the RS200's works career was short. The 200 street cars remain the homologation survivors.

On track

The RS200 contested the 1986 World Rally Championship. It won the Swedish Rally in the hands of Kalle Grundel at national level and showed pace in Greece and Britain before Group B was banned. Evolution cars later ran in rallycross with even higher power.
