Mustang
The Mustang is as much mythology as machine. It represents freedom, youth, and the open road. From Steve McQueen's Highland Green bullitt to the Eleanor of Gone in 60 Seconds, no car has been more thoroughly woven into...

The story
The Ford Mustang created the "pony car" segment in 1964 and has remained one of the most culturally significant American vehicles ever built. Named after the P-51 Mustang fighter aircraft, it offered sporty style at an affordable price when American youth culture was exploding. The Mustang launched a generation of competitors, survived multiple near-death experiences, and remains in production today with Shelby GT500 and Mach 1 variants celebrating its legacy.

History
Lee Iacocca championed the Mustang at Ford to fill a gap for sporty personal cars. Unveiled April 17, 1964 at the New York World's Fair, it sold 22,000 units on its first day, unprecedented. The 1969 Boss 302 and 429 editions were purpose-built for Trans-Am homologation. The Mach 1 and Shelbys GT350/GT500 carried performance credibility. The 1974 Mustang II, downsized for the fuel crisis, was derided. The Fox Body (1979) returned to a clean platform. The 5.0 "Fox Mustang" of the late 1980s became a V8 legend. The SN95 and New Edge redesigns followed. The S197 (2005) reinvented retro-modern muscle car style. The S550 (2015) brought independent rear suspension at last, and went global for the first time. The current S650 (2024) is a major step forward in dynamics.
On track
Shelby American's GT350R dominated the 1965 and 1966 SCCA Class B Production championship. The Boss 302 won the 1970 Trans-Am title with Parnelli Jones. Ford and Shelby won the 1967 Trans-Am championship. The SVO Mustang was a turbocharged technology demonstrator. Modern Mustangs compete in the Mustang Challenge Cup series and the Shelby GT350R has become legendary in club racing.
