The story

The Ford GT40 was built for one purpose: to defeat Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. After Ford's attempted purchase of Ferrari fell through in 1963, Henry Ford II authorized an unlimited budget to build a Le Mans winner with the express intent of humiliating Enzo Ferrari on the world's greatest stage. The GT40 achieved this objective with four consecutive Le Mans victories from 1966 to 1969, two of which featured a historic 1-2-3 finish for Ford.

No other car was built so explicitly to defeat a specific rival and succeeded so completely.

History

Development began with Lola Cars in England before Ford purchased the project and located engineering at Shelby American in California. The GT40 (named for its 40-inch roof height) competed unsuccessfully in 1964 and 1965 before Carroll Shelby's team developed the Mark II with a 7.0-liter big-block V8 producing 485 hp. The 1966 Le Mans saw Ford finish 1st, 2nd, and 3rd ahead of Ferrari. A road-legal version was homologated: 31 street GT40s were produced between 1965 and 1969.

On track

The GT40 won the 24 Hours of Le Mans four consecutive times: 1966, 1967, 1968, and 1969. The 1966 victory was the first for an American manufacturer at Le Mans since Briggs Cunningham in 1950. The GT40 P/1075, winner of 1968 and 1969, is the only car to have won Le Mans twice outright and is considered the most valuable Ford automobile in existence.
