The story

The Ford GT is Ford's premier supercar, produced in two distinct generations: a 2005-2006 retro-styled homage to the GT40 and a 2017-2022 mid-engine carbon fiber race car for the road. The second-generation GT was developed specifically to win the GTE Pro class at the 2016 Le Mans 24 Hours on the 50th anniversary of Ford's original GT40 victory, which it did. Its 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 produces 647 hp in an aerodynamic body developed entirely in a racing context.

History

The first-generation GT debuted at the 2003 Detroit Motor Show as a concept and entered production in 2005 with a supercharged 5.4-liter V8 producing 550 hp, limited to 4,038 units. The second generation was announced at Detroit 2015, a surprise to the industry, with a carbon fiber monocoque, deployable rear wing, and enclosed rear wheel fairings. Ford built 1,350 second-generation GTs through 2022, with customers selected by application based on their intent to drive rather than collect the car.

On track

The Ford GT GTE won at Le Mans in 2016 on the 50th anniversary of the GT40's original victory, defeating factory Ferrari and Porsche entries in a moment of pure sporting theatre. The GT GTE continued competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship and IMSA through 2019, yielding multiple wins and championships.
