The story

The Ferrari 512 BB is the 5.0-liter Berlinetta Boxer that followed the 365 GT4 BB. Its flat-twelve sits longitudinally behind the cabin and made it Ferrari's flagship mid-engine GT through the late 1970s. The later 512 BBi added Bosch fuel injection.

History

Ferrari enlarged the Boxer from 4.4 to 4.9 liters for 1976 to restore performance after emissions changes. Pininfarina kept the low Berlinetta shape. Production ran through 1981 for the carbureted 512 BB and into 1984 for the BBi, with fewer than 3,000 cars across both.

On track

The 512 BB LM racing version competed at Le Mans and in IMSA. It never matched the 512 S/M prototypes of the early 1970s, but it kept Ferrari's flat-twelve in endurance racing into the early 1980s.
