The story
The Ferrari 488 GTB replaced the 458 Italia and marked Ferrari's return to turbocharged V8 engines for the first time since the F40, using a new 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 660 hp. A vortex generator under the nose, active rear diffuser, and blown spoiler produced 50% more downforce than the 458 with significantly lower drag. The 488 redefined what a turbocharged sports car could feel and sound like.
Its Le Mans-proven downforce levels gave everyday drivers access to genuine race-car aerodynamic grip in road conditions.
History
Revealed at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show alongside a Spider variant, the 488 GTB was designed to overcome widespread scepticism about returning to forced induction after the analogue perfection of the 458. Ferrari's engineers tuned throttle response so convincingly that many drivers doubted the car was turbocharged at all. The 488 Pista followed in 2018 with 710 hp, lighter weight, and technologies lifted directly from the 488 GTE Le Mans racing car. The Pista Spider and Challenge variants completed the range before the F8 Tributo succeeded it.
On track
The 488 GTE won GTE Pro class victories at Le Mans in 2017 and 2019 and collected multiple WEC and IMSA championships, making it one of the most successful GT endurance racing cars of the decade. The 488 GT3 and GT3 Evo won hundreds of races globally from 2016 through 2022.
