Volvo Cars is a Swedish manufacturer celebrated for safety innovation, clean Scandinavian design, and, among enthusiasts, a particular strain of understated cool that prizes practicality and surprising performance in equal measure. Founded in Gothenburg in 1927, Volvo invented the three-point seatbelt in 1959 and gave the patent to the entire automotive industry free of charge, a decision credited with saving over one million lives. The classic P1800 sports coupe, the turbocharged 850 estate saloon racing car, and the iconic 240 estate are firmly established as cult objects of automotive culture.
For Life
Assar Gabrielsson, a sales executive, and Gustaf Larson, an engineer, founded AB Volvo (Latin: "I roll") in Gothenburg in 1927 as a subsidiary of the SKF ball-bearing company. The OV4 "Jakob" was its first production car. Through the 1950s and 1960s the PV444 and Amazon (122 Series) brought Volvo global recognition for toughness in Scandinavian conditions. In 1959 engineer Nils Bohlin, recruited from Saab, invented the three-point seatbelt at Volvo; the company published the patent without restriction, calling it a gift to humanity. The P1800 sports coupe (1961–1973), famously driven by Roger Moore as The Saint in the British television series, became a design icon. The 240 and 740 estates dominated the family car market through the 1970s and 1980s. Ford acquired Volvo Cars in 1999 in a bid to build a Premier Automotive Group alongside Jaguar and Aston Martin, then sold it to Geely Automobile of China in 2010. Under Geely, Volvo has pursued aggressive electrification, launching the EX90 and EX30 electric vehicles and targeting a fully electric lineup by 2030.
Volvo's motorsport heritage is surprisingly rich and wonderfully eccentric. The highlight is the 1994 British Touring Car Championship season when Volvo entered the 850 estate (station wagon), refusing competition dogma, campaigning a family car body with a works team. The decision made global headlines and the car genuinely competed, becoming the most talked-about entry in the paddock. The C70 and S60 later competed in the BTCC and Swedish Touring Car Championship (STCC). The 1980s Volvo 240 Turbo Group A car won multiple European Touring Car Championship races. Swedish talent Tom Kristensen, who became nine-time Le Mans winner, cut his teeth in single-seater Volvo-engined Formula cars.
