The story
The Tesla Model S is the luxury electric sedan that established Tesla as a mainstream automotive force and fundamentally changed what a performance sedan could be. The Plaid variant produces 1,020 hp from three electric motors, achieving 0-60 mph in 1.99 seconds, the fastest accelerating production car in the world at its debut, regardless of fuel type or price. Its over-the-air update system made it the first truly software-defined automobile.
History
The Model S entered production in 2012 as Tesla's first mass-market vehicle, quickly winning Motor Trend Car of the Year and Consumer Reports' highest-ever safety rating. Multiple battery variants were offered from 60 to 100 kWh. The P100D Ludicrous+ of 2016 became the world's quickest accelerating production car. The significantly revised Model S Plaid of 2021 introduced the tri-motor layout and sub-2-second 0-60 capability via rollout, heated seats, and a dramatically redesigned yoke steering wheel.
On track
The Tesla Model S has participated in various electric vehicle racing events, showcasing its performance capabilities. It has been used in events like the Electric GT Championship, where modified versions of the Model S competed against other electric vehicles.
