Love. It's what makes a Subaru a Subaru.
Fuji Heavy Industries began making the Subaru 360 minicar in 1958, Japan's first mass-produced small car. The Subaru Legacy (1989) established the flat-four turbocharged all-wheel drive formula. The Impreza (1992) and its WRX turbocharged variant (1994) created a new segment of affordable performance AWD cars. The WRX STi became the most famous rally-homologation road car. The Forester (1997) helped pioneer the mainstream crossover SUV. Toyota acquired a 20% stake in Subaru in 2005. The BRZ coupé was co-developed with Toyota and launched in 2012. Subaru is a major philanthropic backer of the ASPCA in the US reflecting the brand's outdoorsy loyal customer base.
Subaru's Prodrive-run World Rally Championship campaign from 1990 to 2008 is one of the most beloved in WRC history. Colin McRae won the Drivers' Championship in 1995, the first British WRC champion. Petter Solberg won the 2003 title. The Impreza 555 in its distinctive blue and gold McRae livery is an iconic rally car. Richard Burns also won the WRC drivers' title (2001) in a Subaru. Subaru won the Manufacturers' Championship in 1995, 1996, and 1997.
