Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is a Japanese automobile manufacturer. Part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, Mitsubishi is celebrated among enthusiasts for the Lancer Evolution, a turbocharged AWD sedan born from the World Rally Championship era, a direct rival to the Subaru Impreza WRX STi. Today Mitsubishi focuses primarily on crossovers and plug-in hybrids.

History
Mitsubishi produced its first car in 1917. The modern Mitsubishi Motors was established as a separate company in 1970. The Eclipse, Galant, and Starion built 1980s performance credentials. The Eclipse became famous through the early Fast and Furious films. The Lancer Evolution (Evo) debuted in 1992 as a homologation special for WRC and became a series running to the Evo X (2007). The Evo vs WRX STi rivalry defined affordable performance AWD in the late 1990s and 2000s. Mitsubishi sold the Eclipse name to a mild crossover in 2017, frustrating fans. Renault-Nissan acquired a 34% controlling stake in 2016.

Mitsubishi won the World Rally Championship Manufacturers' title in 1998 with the Lancer Evolution. Tommi Mäkinen won four consecutive WRC Drivers' Championships (1996-1999) in the Lancer Evolution, the most dominant driver of his era. The Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero dominated the Dakar Rally for 12 consecutive victories (1992-2007), establishing the most successful record in the event's history. The Galant VR-4 and Eclipse competed in Group A and IMSA GT.
