The story
The McLaren P1 was the British brand's re-entry into the hypercar space after the iconic F1, a plug-in hybrid combining a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 with a 177 hp electric motor for 903 combined horsepower. One of the "Holy Trinity" alongside the Porsche 918 and Ferrari LaFerrari, the P1 prioritized active aerodynamics with a DRS system inspired directly by Formula 1. Only 375 examples were built.
History
Revealed as a concept at Paris 2012 and confirmed for production at Geneva 2013, the P1 was developed under the philosophy of creating the best driver's car on road or track. Its hydraulically controlled suspension, IPAS hybrid system, and DRS-equipped rear wing with 600 kg of downforce at 257 km/h came directly from McLaren's Formula 1 research. Four track-only P1 GTR examples were later built with 1,000 hp for customers who wanted a circuit-focused derivative. The weight, at 1,395 kg, was remarkable given the complexity of the hybrid system.
