The story

The McLaren F1 is widely considered the greatest driver's car ever built. Gordon Murray's concept, a focused, pure, naturally aspirated road supercar with a central seating position, three seats, gold-lined engine bay, and no compromises, produced a car that set the production car speed record at 240.1 mph in 1998 and that many engineers still consider unsurpassed.

The F1 remains the high-water mark of single-minded automotive design.

History

Gordon Murray conceived the F1 in 1988 while stuck in a hot racing paddock and sketched the outline on a sick bag. The central driving position, with passenger seats flanking behind and to the sides, was unique. The BMW M-division supplied the S70/2 6.1 L naturally aspirated V12 producing 627 hp, with no traction control, ABS, or power steering. Kerb weight was 1,138 kg. The carbon fibre monocoque involved aerospace-grade construction techniques. Only 106 road cars and 28 racing variants were built between 1992 and 1998. A road F1 cost £634,500. The central seat layout, gull-wing doors, and total sensory involvement define it as the ultimate expression of an early 1990s hypercar.

On track

The McLaren F1 GTR won Le Mans outright in 1995 on its first attempt, an accomplishment that shook the racing world, as the car was a road car adapted for competition, not a pure racing machine. Five F1 GTRs finished in the top ten. The F1 GTR was raced through 1996–1997 in international GT series.
