The story

The McLaren 720S is the second-generation Super Series that replaced the 650S, introducing a new Monocage II carbon fiber tub, a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 720 hp, and radical aero bodywork with hidden air intakes within the dihedral door glass. More aggressive, more capable, and lighter than its predecessor, the 720S set a new benchmark for accessible track performance in the supercar segment.

As a daily driver that can also dominate a track day, it set the standard for the modern supercar.

History

Unveiled at Geneva 2017, the 720S achieved 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 212 mph, outperforming the Lamborghini Huracán, Ferrari 488, and Porsche 911 Turbo S in most comparative tests. Its hydraulic Proactive Chassis Control suspension delivered exceptional ride quality while maintaining race-car handling limits. A 720S Spider followed in 2019. The GT version offered revised noise insulation and luggage space for longer journeys. In 2022 the 720S was replaced by the 750S.

On track

The 720S GT3 racing variant was campaigned successfully in British GT, Fanatec GT World Challenge, and GT3 championships globally from 2019 onward. Customer teams achieved class victories at endurance events including Spa 24 Hours with the 720S GT3.
