The story

Maserati is an Italian luxury automobile manufacturer founded in Bologna in 1914 by the Maserati brothers. The trident badge, borrowed from Neptune's statue in Bologna's Piazza Maggiore, and rumbling exhaust note define a brand built on Grand Prix victories and effortlessly elegant grand tourers. Part of the Stellantis group, Maserati produces the GranTurismo, Quattroporte, Ghibli, Levante, and Grecale.

Excellence through passion.

History

Alfieri Maserati converted an existing racing car shop into a racing manufacturer. The first Maserati to race was the Tipo 26 in 1926. The brothers achieved success in Grand Prix racing through the 1930s with the 8CM. After Alfieri's death in 1932 the brothers sold the company to industrialist Adolfo Orsi in 1937, although they contracted to remain for 10 years. After WWII the 250F became one of the greatest Formula 1 cars of its era. Juan Manuel Fangio won the 1957 World Championship in the 250F, his last and most brilliant title. Maserati withdrew from racing in 1958 and focussed on road cars: the Quattroporte (1963), Ghibli (1966), and Bora (1971) established the road car legacy. Fiat acquired the company in 1993; Ferrari managed it briefly before Fiat took direct control. Modern Maseratis combine Italian bloodlines with more mainstream engineering.

On track

Maserati won the Formula 1 World Championship in 1957 through Fangio in the 250F. The 250F is considered one of the most beautiful Grand Prix cars ever built. Maserati also competed successfully in SportsCar endurance racing in the 1950s. The company largely withdrew from factory motorsport after 1958 to concentrate on road cars. Maserati returned to endurance racing with the MC12 GT1 (2004-2010), which won four consecutive FIA GT Championship titles.
