The story
The Lotus Exige is the Elise with the roof on and the lunacy turned up, a fixed-roof coupe with aerodynamic downforce generation that transformed the Elise platform into a track-day weapon with genuine circuit ambitions. Sharing the Elise's aluminum chassis and lightweight philosophy, the Exige's fixed hardtop added chassis rigidity and the aerodynamic properties for higher cornering speeds. Its V6 specification produced 410 hp from a supercharged Toyota powerplant in the 410 Sport variant.
History
The Exige debuted in 2000 as a track-focused coupe version of the Elise. The first generation used the 190 hp Rover K-series engine in race trim. Series 2 moved to the Toyota 1ZZ, then the more powerful 2ZZ. The Series 3 represented the most significant change: a 3.5-liter supercharged Toyota V6 producing 350-410 hp in an Elise-class car that weighed just 1,050 kg, giving it a power-to-weight ratio competitive with genuine supercars.
On track
The Exige Race 380 and GT3-specification variants competed actively in GT4 and national championship racing. Lotus Cup series based on the Exige ran globally. The car's combination of light weight and substantial grip made it competitive against cars with significantly higher power outputs in circuit racing.
