The story

Land Rover is a British manufacturer of off-road and luxury four-wheel drive vehicles, founded in 1948 at the Rover Company in Solihull. The original Land Rover was conceived as an austere post-war workhorse, but the lineage evolved over seven decades into the world's benchmark premium 4x4 family, from the working Defender to the luxurious Range Rover, vehicles that defined the premium off-road segment globally and remain the choice of royalty, presidents, and adventurers in equal measure.

Above and Beyond

History

The first Land Rover was sketched by Rover chief designer Maurice Wilks on a beach in Anglesey in 1947, inspired by the Willys Jeep he used on his farm. The Series I launched at the Amsterdam Motor Show in April 1948 with a centre-steer aluminium body designed partly to minimise the use of rationed post-war steel. It was an immediate success as a go-anywhere agricultural and military workhorse and the basic formula remained in continuous production for decades. The Range Rover of 1970 transformed the market: luxurious coil-sprung interior, genuine on-road composure, and near-invincible off-road capability. The Discovery of 1989 democratised the Range Rover's lifestyle proposition for families. Land Rover passed through British Leyland, Rover Group, BMW, Ford, and has operated as part of Tata Motors' Jaguar Land Rover group since 2008. The new-generation Defender of 2020, built on the MLA aluminium platform, revived the most iconic nameplate in 4x4 history after a 23-year production gap.

On track

Land Rover does not compete in traditional circuit racing. The brand's competitive heritage is in expedition and extreme-conditions endurance: Land Rovers crossed the Darien Gap, one of the world's most impassable regions, in 1972; circumnavigated the globe in the 1955–58 Oxford and Cambridge Far Eastern Expedition; and have been used in more polar expeditions than any other vehicle. The Defender won the Camel Trophy, widely regarded as the off-road Olympics, multiple times. The Bowler-Land Rover programme has campaigns Defender-based rally raid cars in Dakar-qualifying events.
