The story

The Dodge Viper is the most extreme American sports car of the last three decades, an 8.0-liter then 8.4-liter V10 producing up to 645 hp in the ACR, rear-wheel drive with no electronic safety aids in early generations, and a tarmac-destroying personality that demanded full commitment from its driver. It was conceived as the American answer to European exotics and built without compromise: no stability control, no ABS, no exterior door handles in generation one.

It is the last true uncompromised American sports car.

History

Conceived by Bob Lutz and Carroll Shelby at Chrysler in the late 1980s as a modern Cobra, the Viper debuted as a concept at Detroit 1989 and began production in 1992 powered by a truck-derived V10 modified by Lamborghini (then Chrysler-owned). The GTS coupe of 1996 became a benchmark performance car. Generation two added 500 hp. The SRT Viper of 2013 finally added stability control and ABS. The ultimate ACR (American Club Racer) with extreme aerodynamics set a production car lap record at the Nürburgring of 7:01.30 in 2017.

On track

The Viper GTS-R won the GT class at Le Mans in 1998, 2000, and 2001 in one of the most unlikely motorsport stories of the era. The ACR set production car lap records at 13 US and international tracks. The Viper Competition Coupe one-make series produced numerous club racing champions throughout the 2000s.
