The story

The Dodge Challenger is America's last true muscle car, a wide-body two-door with a rear-wheel-drive platform that remained in production for 53 years across two distinct generations and was offered with a supercharged 6.2-liter Hellcat V8 producing up to 807 hp in the Redeye and 909 hp in the SRT Super Stock. The third generation was purpose-built to evoke the original 1970 E-body design while packaging modern powertrains that made it the most powerful muscle car ever offered to the public.

History

The original 1970 Challenger was Chrysler's response to the Mustang and Camaro, sharing the E-body platform with the Barracuda. A brief second generation ran from 1978-1983. The modern third generation debuted in 2008 as a deliberate retro design with continuously escalating power outputs. The Hellcat engine of 2015, 707 hp, immediately became the highest-output production V8 in American history. Special editions including Widebody, Super Stock, Jailbreak, and the final Last Call series including the 1000-hp Demon 170 closed out production in 2023.

On track

The Challenger Drag Pak and SRT Demon were NHRA-legal drag racing vehicles with certified sub-9-second quarter-mile times. The Demon 170 achieved an official 0-60 mph time of 1.66 seconds on 315-section drag radials, the quickest certified time for a production car.
