The story
The Chevrolet Corvette is America's longest-running sports car, in continuous production since 1953. Born out of GM's desire to match European sports cars at a fraction of the price, the Corvette has evolved from a chrome-laden 1950s roadster through the Stingray classics of the 1960s, the malaise-era survival years, the modern performance renaissance, and into the landmark mid-engine C8, America's first mid-engine mass-production sports car.

History
Harley Earl showed the Corvette concept at the 1953 Motorama show. The initial six-cylinder version disappointed, nearly leading to cancellation. The introduction of the 265 ci V8 in 1956 saved the model. The C2 Sting Ray (1963) brought independent rear suspension and a fastback body. C3 (1968) rode the muscle car wave until emission standards took power away. C4 (1984) and ZR-1 (1990) restored performance credibility. The C5 (1997) debuted a hydroformed aluminium frame and LS1 V8. C6 400 hp base and 505 hp Z06 (2006) shocked European rivals. The C7 (2013) and Z06 (2015) pushed to 650 hp supercharged. The landmark mid-engine C8 (2020) offered Ferrari-rivalling performance at under $60,000 at launch, causing a firestorm worldwide.
On track
The Corvette Racing program has won the GTE/GTLM class at Le Mans seven times and dominated the IMSA WeatherTech series. The C7.R won the GTE Pro class at Le Mans in 2015. The C6 Z06 R and C7 Z06 R are respected GT3/GTLM platforms. The Corvette appeared in the Sebring 12 Hours and Daytona 24 Hours almost continuously since the 1960s. The original 1954 Corvette raced at Sebring in 1956.
